Configuration Spaces for Wildly Ramified Covers

The classification for wildly ramified covers is more mysterious than for tame covers. A natural configuration space — the space of unordered branch points of a cover — for tame covers allows the construction of Hurwitz spaces, and an often very effective theory for families of tame covers. We define invariants generalizing Nielsen classes for Hurwitz families. The result is a configuration spa...

Flow along a long thin cylinder

Two different approaches have been used to calculate turbulent flow along a long thin cylinder where the flow is aligned with the cylinder. A boundary-layer code is used to predict the mean flow for very long cylinders (length to radius ratio of up to O(10)), with the effects of the turbulence estimated through a turbulence model. Detailed comparison with experimental results shows that the mea...

Maximal Tychonoff Spaces and Normal Isolator Covers

We introduce a new kind of cover called a normal isolator cover to characterize maximal Tychonoff spaces. Such a study is used to provide an alternative proof of an interesting result of Feng and Garcia-Ferreira in 1999 that every maximal Tychonoff space is extremally disconnected. Maximal tychonoffness of subspaces is also discussed.

Reduction of covers and Hurwitz spaces

In this paper we study the reduction of Galois covers of curves, from characteristic zero to positive characteristic. The starting point is a recent result of Raynaud, which gives a criterion for good reduction for covers of the projective line branched at three points. We use the ideas of Raynaud to study the case of covers of the projective line branched at four points. Under some condition o...

Flows, flow-pair covers and cycle double covers

In this paper, some earlier results by Fleischner [H. Fleischner, Bipartizing matchings and Sabidussi’s compatibility conjecture, DiscreteMath. 244 (2002) 77–82] about edge-disjoint bipartizingmatchings of a cubic graphwith a dominating circuit are generalized for graphs without the assumption of the existence of a dominating circuit and 3-regularity. A pair of integer flows (D, f1) and (D, f2)...
